Aaron Witt is the Founder and Lead Consultant for A-Train Tactical, LLC. Aaron earned his Master of Science degree in Criminal Justice Administration from Ferris State University in 2003. He has over 23 years of experience in the Criminal Justice field, including 20+ years of experience as a federal law enforcement officer. Early in his career, Aaron learned the importance of physical security while working as a Corrections Officer at a maximum-security prison. He also holds certifications from FEMA as a Master Exercise Practitioner (MEP) and Michigan State University in Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED).

Following a tragic school shooting in 2012, Aaron decided he wanted to start his own Active Threat consulting business because he believed many organizations were not prepared and were not receiving the appropriate training. For example, some organizations require their employees to sit through virtual training sessions or send one or two people to an off-site conference hoping they will return with valuable information to share. Many of these conferences involve listening to a speaker talk about how Columbine changed the way law enforcement responds to mass shootings and some basic topics your emergency plan should include. Unfortunately, when employees return from these conferences, you still don't have a plan and may not know where to start.
A better strategy is to have a qualified practitioner visit your location to identify existing best practices and areas for improvement. You need someone who will work with you and your team to develop a plan that works for your personnel and others who may be visiting your site. Most importantly, you need someone who is qualified to develop, conduct, and evaluate discussion-based training at your location. The training should consist of plausible and realistic scenarios based on prior incidents and perceived threats. The training should also be designed to help your personnel better understand the importance of knowing your plan, being situationally aware, developing a survival mindset, and working as a team to overcome adversity during an emergency.
